PSHE/RSE

At St Antony’s we are committed to the education of the whole child. Pupils’ spiritual, physical, moral, social, cultural and emotional development is at the heart of our Catholic school ethos. We intend to deliver a PSHE (including RSE) curriculum which is accessible to all and will maximise outcomes for every child, help them to grow in knowledge and understanding, recognise the value of all persons and develop caring and sensitive attitudes.

Through our curriculum we want our pupils to know and understand what constitutes a healthy lifestyle and develop a growing awareness of a broad range of safety issues.

We aim to raise pupils’ self-esteem and enable them to become independent, responsible, healthy and confident members of society.

Our teaching of PSHE is underpinned with our Christian faith understanding that our deepest identity is as a child of God – created, chosen and loved by God.  We aspire for all children to lead happy, successful lives. To prepare them for this, we explore a range of topics in PSHE to promote healthy lifestyles and relationships; mutual respect and social harmony; and an understanding of the right and responsibilities,  behaviours and attitudes that are necessary in order to play meaningful roles in society. 

 

In partnership with parents, we teach PSHE and RSE according to the National Curriculum and PHSE Association guidance with the Catholic faith and teachings at the heart. We are supported by a clear skills and knowledge progression outlined in the ‘Ten Ten Life To The Full Plus Scheme’. This ensures that skills and knowledge are built on year by year to maximise learning for all children. 

Although the discrete PHSE and RSE curriculum is timetabled, a significant proportion of PHSE provision takes place within the wider school and curriculum contexts, for example, Science and RE lessons, Multi-Faith Weeks and enrichment projects enabling our children to develop their ability to tackle the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. 

 

RSE

Our whole school intent for RSE

  • For teaching and learning to be a sacred experience, with Christ known and at the core of our teaching.

  • Inspired by the examples of Pope Francis, be rooted in the principles of Catholic Social Teaching.

  • Develop communication skills necessary for life and learning, promoting high expectations and standards in reading, writing and maths across a range of subject areas.

  • Providing opportunities for children to develop as independent, confident and successful learners with high aspirations who know how to make a positive contribution to their community and wider society.

  • Providing diverse and rich SMSC (spiritual, moral social and cultural development) opportunities from which children develop a range of transferable skills.

  • Encourage children to respect each other and have respect for people of all faiths, race and gender, ensuring children are well prepared for a rapidly changing world.

 

Our implementation of RSE

Our RSE Curriculum is enhanced with additional National and Diocesan programmes such as ‘Ten:Ten – Life to the Full’.  Life to the Full is a programme in Relationship and Health Education for Catholic primary schools throughout the UK.

The teaching of RSE (Relationships and Sex Education) are at a level which is appropriate to the age and stage of development of our children. We believe that the teaching about human love and relationships must have the teachings of Jesus at its core and promote Catholic virtues as well as equipping all children with the clear and scientific information they need to maintain successful and happy relationships and healthy minds and bodies.

Three key themes, in RSE, will be explored:

  • We are created and loved by God

  • We are created to love others

  • We are created to live in communities: local, national & global
