Reading

Ephesians 3:4
In reading this, then, you will be able to understand, my insight into the mystery of Christ

We are the Reading Ambassadors for 2023-2024

OUR INTENT

The Intent of our reading curriculum is for children to quickly become fluent and confident readers who can use this key life skill to make the most of their learning opportunities. We want them to be enthusiastic readers who have their imaginations kindled through quality stories and novels. We want our learners to extend their general knowledge of the world and have their curiosity sparked as they research and enquire through a range of media. We want them to understand an author’s intentions and in turn develop their own vocabulary to express themselves clearly. Working with parents, we intend that our pupils leave St Antony’s with a positive opinion of themselves as readers, ready for the next stage of their educational journey.

“So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ’’ Romans 10:17

THE IMPLEMENTATION OF OUR READING CURRICULUM

The subject leader for Reading is Mrs Heather McGowan supported by Mrs Park. The subject leaders are responsible for the day to day management of resources, keeping up to date in curriculum innovation, sharing good practice with staff and ensuring that planning for the subject is progressive and in line with national expectations. Subject leaders are the ‘expert’ in school and can offer support to other staff including signposting where necessary. Together with the Phonics and Early Reading leader, Mrs Macneal, and Governors, Mrs McGowan is involved in the monitoring, review and evaluation of reading both as a standalone and as part of the wider curriculum.

THE IMPACT OF OUR CURRICULUM

The ability to read fluently, confidently and with enjoyment is a vital key to success not only at school but also in later life. We aim to give St. Antony’s children the best possible start to their school lives and beyond.

Our pupils are enthusiastic readers and we are meeting and exceeding National Standards at the end of KS2 in Reading year on year.

We are upgrading our library areas this year and asked Kate Hollern MP to open our Picture Book Library in Autumn 2023.

We take part in the Fantastic Book Awards every year.

Steve Cole, author, congratulates our Year 6 FBA pupils!

Pupils read a variety of newly published books, discuss through their book club and vote for the best at the end. We let the authors know what we think and often get a great response!

PLEASE ENJOY READING AT HOME!

Reading at home is so valuable for a child's confidence, fluency, understanding and enjoyment of reading. Listening to your child read or sharing a book together regularly, is very important.  It is staggering to see the real difference time spent reading at home can make.

Research proves that reading at home increases vocabulary knowledge and understanding of the world thereby increasing life chances and future career success.

Children are encouraged to use our school library and have their reading books changed in school regularly. Our school library is open every lunchtime and is run by our school librarians.

The library is also available for parents during our parent coffee and information mornings every Wednesday and  Friday 8:30am to 10am.  You can encourage digital reading for free on these websites!
